The
RAINBOWS FOR KIDS CHARITY BENEFIT
The second annual "Rainbows for Kids" charity benefit for Arkansas Children's
Hospital was held on August 11th at the Little Red Fly Shop of Heber Springs. In
spite of the near record heat, lots of people showed up and donated money to the
hospital. In fact, thousands of dollars were raised for this worthy cause and it's
not too late for you to contribute to the hospital. Make one out to Arkansas
Children's Hospital and mail it to us at the shop. We will forward all your dollars
to the hospital with a grateful heart.
The casting competition brought oohs and aahs from the onlookers as anglers tried to
cast their flies through a hula hoop from forty feet away. Long distance casting was
hampered by the gusty winds but a cast of 80 feet won the day for Mr. Jay Black. The
fly tying contest was also won by Mr Black. Games for children, face painting and
fly tying demonstrations completed the day's activities.
Mr Chuck Farneth, fly fishing gold medalist in the ESPN Outdoor Games was present
during the benefit and wowed the crowds with incredible casting skills. Although
there was a substantial head wind, casts over 100 feet were easily accomplished. Mr.
Chuck Easterling, Federation of Fly Fishers certified master casting instructor was
also on hand to explain casting principles and to demonstrate all of the types of
casts.
A silent auction was held inside the Little Red Fly Shop and virtually everything
sold. Items included a hand made quilt that sold for $350.00, guide trips and free
lodging valued at $500.00, a Sage rod and reel combo that went for $650.00 and
dozens of other items too numerous to mention.
Lunch consisted of hamburgers, hot dogs and cold drinks. Donations were accepted for
the free meal and all the money went to benefit the hospital. In fact, every penny
raised went to Arkansas Children's Hospital. The fly shop kept nothing. It is, after
all, for the children!
Plans are already underway for next years event. There is a rumor that there may be
a fishing competition involved. As the third annual event becomes a reality, details
will be displayed in this space. Thanks to everyone who donated money to Arkansas
Children's Hospital!
