June 6, 2009 | FISHING REPORT - LITTLE RED RIVER
ANOTHER UPDATE-JUNE 6TH: SWPA posted Greers Ferry water releases for the weekend and Monday. Water releases are to begin at 10:00 am today, 4:00 am on Sunday and 11:00 am on Monday. The water in the Little Red looks good, the skies are blue and the barometric pressure is steady. Conditions are excellent for fishing. UPDATE - JUNE 5TH - I noticed that SWPA scheduled water releases at Greers Ferry for 10:00 am this morning. I called them and asked if we could expect similar releases throughout the weekend. They said they would comply. If this happens, you will be able to wade the river at JFK Park from dawn until 10:00 am, Cow Shoal from dawn until about11:30 am, Winkley Shoal from dawn until about 1:30 pm and Libby Shoal from dawn until about 3:00 pm. The water has cleared up nicely and the trout are biting! UPDATE - JUNE 4TH: We had a 3 inch rain event last night and the river is high and muddy. The Corps is releasing water as I type which should flush most of the sediment downstream by tomorrow. Releases have been occurring at 6:00 am or 7:00 am each day. There has been a change in my report about the Kids's Fishing Derby. The age of the participants is 15 and under and the hours of the event are now 7:00 am until noon. Little Red Fishing Report: June 2, '09 The Greers Ferry Power House has been releasing water every day beginning around 10:00 am continuing until 10:00 pm. I spoke with the Corps this morning and was told that we can anticipate this protocol to continue. You can fish at JFK Park from dawn until the horn sounds at 10:00 am then relocate to Winkley Shoal and fish until the high water arrives at about 1:30 pm and until 3:00 pm or so at Libby Shoal. I was anticipating 24/7 releases at Greers Ferry, but, apparently, this is not the plan at this time. Fishing is great and the river is beautiful. The Little Red Fly Shop is conducting a beginners fly tying class on June 27th at the shop. The class begins at 8:00 am, ends about 4:00ish pm and costs $100.00 per person. The shop will provide the tools and materials for use during the class. You will learn to tie several flies including the San Juan worm, sowbug, red @ss soft hackle, etc. all useful in the trout waters of Arkansas. The "ever-patient" Donnie Hyslip is the instructor. Please call soon to reserve your spot. Your local chapter of Trout Unlimited will help host the Kid's Fishing Derby at JFK Park below the Greers Ferry Dam. The head honcho is Mr. Sam Lester who works tirelessly to insure that the kids have a wonderful experience. This year it will be on Saturday the 13th of June from 9:00 am until 2:00 pm. Each child must register the morning of the event and every kid (12 yrs. old and under) will get a prize! Aquatic insect hatches are occurring most days with midges, sulphurs, caddis, bwo and march browns being the most prolific. Good dry flies to try include the midge (#22 or smaller in cream), elk hair caddis (#16-#20 tan or black), para sulphur (#18), parachute adams (#18), blue winged olive (#18), American march brown (#14) or crackleback (#12). Sub-surface flies that are working include the lowly but abundant sowbug (#14-#16 tan, smokey olive, uv tan, uv light gray or peacock), zebra midge (#16-#22 red, copper or black), red or green @ss soft hackle emerger (#14-#18), pheasant tail (#16), San Juan worm (#12-#14), chronic (#14) or woolly bugger (#8-#12 olive, brown or black). Fishing in high water from a boat? Brightly colored San Juan worms seem to work the best. Be sure to use enough weight to get the fly down to the streambed. I have been writing since April 14th about problems with water management with the Corps of Engineers and Southwestern Power Administration. Their refusal to lower lake levels in the winter in anticipation of spring rains and executing water releases without river recreation in mind has resulted in a devastating blow to our tourism industry all across northern Arkansas. If you would like to express your feelings about this, please refer to my past reports at www.littleredflyshop.com and e-mail or call in your responses to me. I didn't read the article, but, I am told that the most recent issue of Outdoor Life magazine listed the top 200 places in America to live if you are a sportsman. Number 19 on the list was Mountain Home. Number 23 on the list was Heber Springs. Wow! Two Arkansas cities in the top 25! Check out this article, posted on our Blog site here.
